Power Reliablity

Reliable Power. Reliable People.

PenLight is constantly analyzing all aspects of the electric system for reliability measures.  This includes monitoring the transmission lines that bring power across the Narrows to our substations, and our distribution system, which brings power to your home or business.  Our power reliability program includes vegetation management (controlling trees under the power lines), tree-wire, overhead system improvements, automated switching capabilities, conversion of overhead lines to underground, and replacing aging underground cables.  Based on system performance information, PenLight is able to determine key sections of the system that may benefit from some type of system improvement.

Engineering and Operations work together to operate our automated outage reporting system. Combined with SCADA and GIS, these systems alert us to outages as soon as they occur. The SCADA system allows us to remotely switch and reroute power in our service territory from our PenLight facilities. The GIS mapping system is installed on service vehicle laptops, allowing service crews to  pinpoint outages and restore power more quickly.
