Summer Water Conservation Benefits Everyone

Water Department reminds our community of the importance of water conservation. Though our region is known for its rainfall, the summer months often bring extended dry spells that can put stress on our water supply. Conserving water during these peak times helps protect the environment, manage costs, and ensure a reliable supply for everyone. 49302

Why Conservation Matters

During summer, water demand increases significantly, particularly for outdoor use. By being mindful of how and when we use water, we help:

  • Preserve aquifer levels and reduce strain on wells and infrastructure.
  • Minimize energy costs for pumping and treatment.
  • Keep water rates stable for all members.

Smart Summer Water Use Tips

  • Water lawns wisely. Lawns only need about 1 inch of water per week, including rainfall. Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation, and consider using a timer or smart irrigation system.
  • Fix leaks quickly. Even small drips from faucets or outdoor spigots can waste hundreds of gallons over the summer.
  • Choose drought-tolerant landscaping. Plant native or drought-resistant species that thrive in our local climate with minimal watering.
  • Use mulch. Adding mulch to garden beds retains moisture and reduces the frequent need for watering.
  • Reuse water when possible. Collect rainwater and reuse water from cooking, like rinsing vegetables, for plants and flowers. 37140
  • Use a broom instead of a hose. Spraying driveways or sidewalks with a hose can waste hundreds of gallons of water. A broom gets the job done just as well.
