Spring Safety: Look Up & Call Before You Dig

Spring is right around the corner, and for many in our community, March marks the unofficial start of yard work season. As you head outside to prune trees, clean gutters, plant gardens, or tackle home improvement projects, PenLight reminds you to keep safety top of mind, especially around electrical equipment. 3401

Remember these 2 important safety rules before you start:

Look Up!

When working outdoors, always be aware of overhead power lines. If you’re using a ladder, trimming trees, or cleaning gutters, stay at least 10 feet away from all overhead lines. Never attempt to trim branches that are touching or close to a power line–this can be extremely dangerous. If you notice trees or branches near power lines, contact PenLight, and our trained crews will take care of them safely.

Call 811 Before You Dig

Planning to plant a garden, install a fence, or start any project that requires digging? Whether you’re a homeowner or a contractor, Washington law requires calling 811 at least 2 business days before digging. This free service marks underground utility lines so you can avoid accidental contact that could cause injuries, outages, or costly repairs.

Taking a few simple steps before you begin can help protect you, your family, and your neighbors. PenLight is committed to keeping our community safe. Thank you for doing your part this spring.
