Reliability Requires Investment

As your local, not-for-profit power provider, Peninsula Light Co.’s mission is simple: Deliver safe, reliable electricity and support our communities. Behind every light switch, warm home, and thriving business is a complex system that needs constant attention. Reliable power doesn’t happen by accident - it requires ongoing investment in maintenance, repairs, upgrades, and new technologies that help us operate more efficiently.

Much of our electric system was built decades ago. While it performs well, aging infrastructure must be maintained, repaired, or replaced to ensure safety and reliability. Poles, wires, transformers, and substations have limited lifespans. Routine maintenance helps, but proactive replacement and upgrades prevent failures and reduce outages.

Electricity use is changing. Homes and businesses are using more power than ever before, and demand continues to grow. Electric vehicles, advanced heating and cooling, smart appliances, and new development add load to the system. PenLight must keep investing in improvements to ensure reliable service now and in the future.

Strengthening the Grid for the Future

PenLight is planning and investing in key projects to strengthen the electric system and improve reliability.

A major focus is upgrading and replacing substations, which are critical hubs for delivering power. Modernizing these facilities improves capacity and safety and helps handle increasing demand and emerging technologies.

PenLight is also working to reduce outages from vehicle-to-pole collisions by investing in transmission pole protection. Strengthening pole structures and using protective designs help reduce impacts and improve safety.

Vegetation management is another essential part of reliability. Trees and vegetation cause outages, especially during storms. By expanding trimming cycles, removing hazardous trees, and using data to identify high-risk areas, PenLight works to reduce weather-related outages while balancing environmental stewardship.

Advanced technologies play a growing role in system planning. Monitoring and inspection tools help crews identify vulnerable areas before problems occur, prioritize upgrades, and replace equipment proactively.

System wide, from substation to meter, 80% of PenLight’s lines are underground, which has improved reliability significantly over the years. However, undergrounding more lines today is complex and costly, often several million dollars per mile. It must be carefully evaluated to balance costs and benefits.

Technology also reshapes daily operations. Automated switching, real-time monitoring, and advanced controls help crews isolate outages and restore power faster, minimizing the number of members affected.

Investing in Reliability

These improvements require planning and investment, but the benefits are substantial. A stronger electric system supports economic growth, improves service and enhances safety. It helps ensure power is available when needed most.

Our commitment to reliability goes beyond infrastructure. It reflects our responsibility to members and communities. Every repair, upgrade and technology investment supports daily life - from homes and schools to healthcare and businesses.

By investing in our electric system today, Peninsula Light Co. is preparing for the future and continuing to deliver reliable service our members expect. Together, we are building a stronger, more resilient energy system for generations to come.
