Important Update: Outage Texting Number Change

To continue providing reliable outage communication, we are updating the phone number for outage-reporting text messages.

What’s Changing?

Beginning May 26, Peninsula Light Co. members will need to use a new number to report outages by text.

  • New outage texting number: (253) 857-1550
  • Previous outage texting number/code: 85700

After this date, messages sent to 85700 may not receive a response, so we encourage members to update their contacts now.

Haven’t Signed Up for Text Outage Reporting? Start Here:

To report an outage by phone or text, your phone number must first be linked to your account, so our system can match it with your service address. This helps our crews locate outages faster and allows you to report outages conveniently.

Step 1: Link your phone number to your account

You can do this in 1 of 2 ways:

  • Call Member Services at (253) 857-5950, and a representative will assist you.
  • Utilize the SmartHub app to verify/add your phone number to your account

Step 2: Activate text messaging

Once your number is linked, follow these steps to enable outage texting:

  1. Open your text messaging app.
  2. Create a new message.
  3. Enter 253-857-1550 in the recipient field.
  4. In the message, type penlight.
  5. Press send.
  6. Follow the prompts to select your service address(es).

How to Report an Outage by Text

After activating or updating your information, when you are experiencing an outage, text OUT to 253-857-1550 to report your outage.

Important Reminder

Even if you previously activated text messaging using 85700, you will need to save and use the new number (253) 857-1550 starting May 26 for outage reporting.

Why the Change?

Wireless carriers are phasing out shared short codes, like 85700, for business messaging. As part of this industry-wide shift, we are moving to a dedicated 10-digit number to ensure continued, reliable service for outage reporting and updates.
