From PenLight’s Water Department: Summer Water Conservation Tips

Working Together To Sustain Our Shared Resource

As temperatures rise and the Pacific Northwest enters the dry season, Peninsula Light Co.’s Water Department is reminding our community of the importance of water conservation. Though our region is known for its rainfall, summer months often bring extended dry spells that can stress our water supply. Conserving water during peak times helps protect the environment, manage costs, and ensure a reliable supply for everyone.

At PenLight, we are committed to providing safe, clean water to our members year-round - and that starts with responsible usage. Small changes in daily habits can add up to big savings.

Why Conservation Matters

During summer, water demand can increase significantly - particularly for outdoor use. Irrigating lawns, washing vehicles and filling pools contribute to peak usage, sometimes doubling typical household consumption. By being mindful of how and when we use water, we help:

  • Preserve aquifer levels and reduce strain on wells and infrastructure
  • Minimize energy costs for pumping and treatment
  • Keep water rates stable for all members

Smart Summer Tips To Save Water

  • Water lawns wisely: Lawns need about 1 inch of water per week, including rainfall. Water early morning or late evening to reduce evaporation, and consider using a programmable timer or smart irrigation system.
  • Fix leaks quickly: Even small drips can waste hundreds of gallons over the summer.
  • Choose drought-tolerant landscaping: Plant native or drought-resistant species that thrive with minimal watering.
  • Use mulch: Mulch retains moisture and reduces the need for frequent watering. 24016
  • Reuse water when possible: Collect rainwater or reuse water from cooking, like rinsing vegetables, for plants and flowers.
  • Use a broom instead of a hose: Clean driveways with a broom rather than wasting hundreds of gallons with a hose.

Our Commitment To Sustainability

PenLight’s Water Department believes that conservation isn’t just a seasonal habit - it’s a shared responsibility. By working together, we can ensure a healthy water supply for future generations.
