Storm Safety Tips for the Pacific Northwest
We are no strangers to storms here in the Pacific Northwest, particularly those with high winds that can bring down tree limbs, trees, and power lines. Your safety is our top priority. During storm season, it’s important to stay vigilant and prepared. Here are some key safety tips to remember if you encounter downed power lines:
- Assume all downed power lines are energized and dangerous. Never approach or touch a downed line, as it can still carry a live electrical current. Even if it appears to be inactive, always treat it as though it is energized.
- Stay a safe distance away. Downed power lines can energize the ground up to 100 feet away from the line. Keep a wide safety zone to protect yourself from electrical shock.
- Do not drive over a downed line, and avoid driving near or through water that is touching a downed power line, as water is an excellent conductor of electricity. This could cause a dangerous shock or electrocution.
- Report the downed line immediately. If you spot a downed power line, ensure you are at a safe distance. Contact local authorities, and report it to PenLight right away at (877) 853-1388.
- Never attempt to move a downed line. Even if you think a downed line is unenergized, do not attempt to move it, especially with a nonconductive item. Always wait for trained professionals to handle the situation.
By following these safety precautions, you can help ensure your safety and that of others during storm season. Stay safe, and let’s work together to keep our community protected.
