October is National Co-op Month, a time to reflect on the unique value and enduring strength of the cooperative business model. For Peninsula Light Co., this year’s celebration holds special meaning as we mark 100 years of service for our members.
When PenLight was founded in 1925, 13 neighbors came together to bring electricity to the Key Peninsula and Gig Harbor area when no other utility would. Their spirit and $200 each in start-up capital launched a community-owned utility that has grown and thrived for a century.
The contrasts between then and now show how far we’ve come:
- Members served: From fewer than 100 households in 1925 to over 33,000 members today.
- Miles of line: From a few miles of wire to over 1,100 miles of distribution line. 10566
- Rates & reliability: From frequent outages and high costs to affordable, reliable service—now averaging less than Washington’s $.12 per kilowatt-hour average.
- Power source: From local generation 100 years ago to 95% carbon-free power through Bonneville Power Administration.
PenLight remains member-owned and governed by a local, elected Board of Directors that makes every decision with the community in mind.
Over the past century, PenLight has also grown as a community partner. Programs like Project Help, energy assistance, local scholarships, and energy-efficiency incentives are just some ways we give back.
This National Co-op Month, we honor our past and look forward to a future of innovation, reliability, and sustainability. Thank you for being part of our 100-year story.
