A Year in Review: 2025 From the Desk of Jafar Taghavi, CEO, Peninsula Light Company

As 2025 comes to a close, I want to extend my gratitude to our members, employees, board, and community partners for a remarkable year – 1 that will hold a special place in Peninsula Light Company’s long and storied history.

This year, PenLight proudly celebrated its 100-year anniversary. Reaching a century of service is more than a milestone. It is a testament to the dedication, resilience, and forward-looking vision of the generations who built and sustained this cooperative. Our founders created PenLight to bring power and opportunity to a growing community. Today, we honor that legacy by continuing to elevate our service, strengthen our systems, and innovate for the future. Every improvement we make is another chapter in a legacy that will carry well into the next century.

A defining highlight of 2025 was the successful execution of our long-term power supply contract with the Bonneville Power Administration, or BPA. This contract–signed in person with BPA executives at our November Board Meeting–secures reliable, cost-based power for our members from October 2028 through September 2044. It represents years of collaboration, strategic planning, and active engagement through BPA’s public processes. This achievement ensures long-term stability and reinforces PenLight’s commitment to delivering affordable, dependable energy.

Throughout the year, we also advanced several major initiatives that position us for continued operational excellence. Our grid modernization efforts, digital transformation work, overall readiness planning, and enhanced member service pathways all reflect our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement. As we commemorate 100 years, we are equally focused on building the systems and capabilities that will support the next 100.

As we enter 2026, PenLight will continue to build on the strong momentum from this past year. We will advance our clean energy planning, refine member-facing tools and technologies, and strengthen the reliability of our system as our service territory continues to grow. Our focus remains on thoughtful investment, transparent communication, and providing exceptional value to the members who depend on us.

Most importantly, we will carry forward the spirit of our centennial–honoring our past by relentlessly elevating our future. Together, we will continue to add to PenLight’s legacy through responsible leadership, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to the community we serve.

Thank you for being part of the PenLight story. Here’s to the next year–and the next century–of powering Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula with pride.

Warm regards,
Jafar Taghavi
