30 Years of Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Celebrating ProjectHELP

For 30 years, Peninsula Light Company’s ProjectHELP program has reflected one of the cooperative’s core values - Concern for Community. Since 1996, the member-funded assistance program has provided temporary financial support to qualifying members facing unexpected hardships, ensuring help is available when needed most.

Whether a family is experiencing a medical emergency, job loss, or another unforeseen challenge, ProjectHELP offers a helping hand. Every dollar donated stays local, directly benefiting families throughout our service area.

Growing to Meet Members’ Needs

ProjectHELP has evolved over 3 decades to better support members. Originally offered during a limited application period, the program expanded into a year-round resource, allowing members to apply whenever a hardship arises rather than waiting for a designated enrollment window.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, PenLight temporarily increased assistance to qualifying members, helping more families maintain essential electric service during one of the most challenging periods in recent history.

Small Change. Big Impact.

Members can support ProjectHELP through Project RoundUP, a voluntary program that rounds up members’ monthly electric bill to the next whole dollar, with spare change automatically donated to the fund.

A few cents each month adds up. For example:

  • A bill of $98.42 rounds up to $99 - a 58¢ donation (about $7 per year).
  • A bill of $145.75 rounds up to $146 - a 25¢ donation (about $3 per year).
  • A bill of $82.10 rounds up to $83 - a 90¢ donation (about $11 per year).

On average, Project RoundUP participants contribute about $6 per year - less than a cup of coffee. When hundreds of members participate, those spare pennies become thousands of dollars helping local families. Members may also make a one-time or recurring online donation, with every contribution staying within PenLight’s service territory.

Thank You for 30 Years of Giving

As PenLight celebrates this milestone, we extend sincere appreciation to every member who has rounded up a bill, made a donation or supported the program over the years. Your generosity has helped thousands of neighbors weather difficult times while strengthening the cooperative spirit that defines PenLight.
