Here is an interesting fact: More energy from the sun falls on the earth in one hour than is used by everyone in the world in one year. Various technologies convert sunlight to usable energy for homes and office buildings. The most common is photovoltaic (PV) panels.
PV panels create direct current electricity that is converted to alternating current by a power inverter before it is connected to the grid. Solar panels are composed of cells typically made of silicon and wired together into an array of varying sizes and installed on the rooftops of homes and businesses or as a ground-mount system.
Thanks to sunlight and PenLight’s net-metering program, more than 200 members have installed solar systems on their homes or businesses.
PenLight’s net-metering program enables the value of excess electricity generated by members’ solar power systems to be credited to their monthly bills at the same rate they are charged for electricity.
During the day, most systems produce more electricity than members use. Net metering allows that power to be exported to the PenLight grid. Billing credits reduce near-term electric bills.
A federal tax credit for residential and commercial solar installations has been extended through December 31, 2023. For details, check the Internal Revenue Service and Department of Energy websites.
