Great Things For a Great Community

All of us at Peninsula Light Company are grateful to live and work in a great community with good neighbors and so much natural beauty. That’s why we strive to do our part in helping make the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula area an even better place to be. You’ll see Peninsula Light folks volunteering on little league fields, organizing and participating in blood drives, supporting our local schools, and working to help the less fortunate. We also provide many informative workshops and partner with local organizations to further support our community.

As a locally-owned, non-profit cooperative (directed by elected representatives from our community), we have your interests in mind. The following list shows some of the ways we’ve chosen to get involved. We encourage all of our neighbors to support our community too.

Here are a few of the great causes that Peninsula Light has supported:

Maritime Gig (2000-present)
PLC is a continuous sponsor of Gig Harbor's annual "Maritime Gig."

Cancer Relay for Life (1998-present)
Employees came in first place two years on funds collected for cancer research. In addition to getting sponsors for the relay, employees held a silent auction, car wash, and barbecue. Individual employee payroll deductions were matched by the company. The PenLight Board was also very generous in contributing funds to this worthy cause.

HEROES Program (1998-present)
PLC helps the elderly through referral and outreach services.

High School Scholarships (1998-present)
Each year, PLC provides each local high school (Gig Harbor High, Henderson Bay High and Peninsula High) with a $1,500 scholarship.

Peninsula School District Foundation (1998-present)
PLC contributes $1,500 annually to the PSD Education Foundation.

Safety Education
PLC Journeyman Linemen have for years conducted safety education demonstrations at local elementary schools.

Cascade Regional Blood Services (1997-present)
This organization visits our headquarters quarterly to allow PLC employees to donate their blood for this life-saving cause.

Peninsula Athletic Association (1997-present)
Peninsula Light is a continuous sponsor for a PAA football team each year.

Key Peninsula Little League (1997-present)
Each year, PLC sponsors a KPLL baseball team. (PLC also helped to build the new KPLL ball field, including light poles, power and use of the land - our old pole yard.)

Stream Team (1997-present)
PLC is working with area schools in a hands-on program to study and improve the quality of local streams.

Citizens of the Year (1997)
PLC employees were elected Citizens of the Year..."for the enormous amount of work employees uncomplainingly endured under extremely frigid and dangerous conditions throughout the December and January, 1996-1997 near catastrophic snow, wind, rain and ice storms to get our Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula electricity back in life sustaining working order." (Key Peninsula Lion's Club)

KGHP Radio Station (1996-present)
PLC has worked with the Peninsula School District to establish, implement, and fund this student-run station. The station is also used as an emergency broadcasting center for the light company (we have broadcast facilities on-site). Members can tune in at the top and bottom of every hour to hear updates on severe outages, storms or disasters.

Paint Tacoma-Pierce Beautiful (1996-2000)
PLC employees volunteer to prepare and paint the homes of disadvantaged senior citizens at various locations on the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsulas. The work is done on the employees' own time.

National Night Out (1996-1998)
This honor was awarded to PLC for participating in "America's Night Out Against Crime."

BATTEN'S Disease (1996)
For helping with the annual conference, PLC received this award.

Citation for Services Rendered to the Community (1996)
Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Helping Hand Award (1996)
Key Peninsula Fire Department.

10 Years Award (1995)
PLC was awarded this honor..."in recognition of, and appreciation for, taking an active interest in the fire safety education of our community." (Pierce County Fire District #16)
