Apprentice Wireman/Journeyman Lineman

Peninsula Light Company, a utility co-operative in beautiful Gig Harbor, Washington is seeking a full-time Apprentice Wireman/Journeyman Lineman. We offer competitive wages and generous benefits.

General Function

Under the direction of the Wireman Foreman and the Journeyman Wireman, this is a training apprenticeship program required to work with a qualified Journeyman Wireman in a structured program for four (4) years.  The individual shall be required to demonstrate skill and proficiency by acquiring all knowledge required of a Journeyman Wireman to perform the job duties and responsibilities of constructing, maintaining and repairing substation and the related system equipment.  Must be a Journeyman Lineman.

 

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Performs all of the duties of a Journeyman Lineman; and performs all of the duties of an Apprentice Wireman, as outlined below:

  1. Maintains physical fitness capable of responding to the strength, stamina, mobility, alertness and concentration of the position.
  2. Studies, prepares and demonstrates knowledge of all assigned lesson plans and satisfactorily passes all examinations associated with the apprenticeship program.
  3. Attends four (4) years of off-hours schooling of an approved curriculum of applicable electricity, mathematics and other courses related to the trade.
  4. Performs work under supervised conditions, as assigned, to learn all the duties of a Journeyman Wireman.
  5. Receives instruction, performs tasks and prepares and maintains substation and equipment records and reports as assigned.
  6. Back-up System Dispatcher
  7. Installs, operates, repairs, maintains, tests and programs electrical equipment used in transmission and distribution systems.
  8. Operates all types of switches and other electrical equipment for shifting load, working clearances and related activities.
  9. Uses a wide variety of tools and test equipment.
  10. Drives electric utility vehicles and operates ancillary equipment.
  11. Performs other related training activities and work as assigned.

General classification of equipment and work including but not limited to the following:

¨     Transformers, load tap changers, regulators, reclosers, circuit switchers, motor operated switches and related equipment.     

¨     Substation steel structures, foundations, bus structures, switches, insulators, arresters, grounding, conduit and feeder terminations.   

¨     Electrical, solid state and microprocessor devices and wiring for voltage regulation, circuit protection and system control.   

¨     SCADA system, Remote Terminal Units, fiber links and transducers.

¨     Potential transformers, current transformers and other metering devices related to substations.

       

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

·      Demonstrated proficiency in Journeyman Lineman skills.

·      Basic knowledge of mathematics, including simple algebra and fundamentals of trigonometry.

·      Basic knowledge of the principles of electricity and circuits.

·      Demonstrated ability to read maps, plans, profiles and specification sheets.

·      Ability to attend off-hours classes for four (4) years (nine months per year).

·      Demonstrated ability to deal with stress.

·      Ability to cooperate and interact with co-worker and trainees to accomplish training objectives.

·      Ability to life eight-five (85) pounds.

·      Ability to obtain CPR certification and a first aid card.

·      Ability to successfully pass a comprehensive physical examination.

·      Knowledge of the Washington State Electrical Workers’ Safety Rules (WAC 296-45) and OSHA 1910.29

·      Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and to maintain interpersonal skills including tact, patience and courtesy with fellow employees and customers.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands

Training is performed both in a classroom and outside under all weather conditions.  A demonstration of physical strength will be required throughout the entire course.  During system emergencies, individual is expected to work extended out-of-routine hours.  Position requires lifting, climbing, pushing, and pulling.  An employee in this position may be exposed to hazardous materials, gases and fumes

Recruiting Requirements

High school diploma or G.E.D. and Journeyman Lineman card are required.  Applicants must at least eighteen (18) years old and be capable of meeting the requirement of the trade.  Must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license and successfully pass a physical examination.  Must qualify for the Washington State combination driver’s license (CDL) with Class A Endorsement, flagging, first aid and CPR certification.  Complete four (4) years of training courses prescribed by the Apprenticeship Committee and complete a Journeyman Wireman test offered by Union Local #483, Local 77 or designated apprentice school.  Must be willing to be available and responsive to emergency call-outs.
